Old christian churches & monasteries

Many churches and monasteries were destroyed when the Turkish occupied the island, but many survived and today although in a semi ruined state they still possess historical and religious interest.

Monastery of Christ The Saviour

This monastery was built on the summit of Mount Dikeos in 1079 by the Koan Monk Arsenics Skinouris. It was given the golden seal of approval by the Emperor of Byzantium; Nikiforos Botianatos with the financial support of 16 coins, which was given to support the monks there at the time. It suffered in the hands of various occupiers of the island, but today is still intact and is used for religious services, particularly on 6th August. The Holy Day "The Transfiguration of Christ" (see " Name days and festivals"). Located in the region of Asfendiou are also the old churches of The Madonna of Mongari, The Madonna of Tsakali, the Church of the Cross and the Church of St. Marina.

Monastery of the Spondon

This monastery can be found at the foot of Mount Dikeos on the outskirts of Zia and is dedicated to The Holy Madonna. It was built by St Christadoulos, the foundations dating back to 1085-1089. The Chapel of the Assumption of the Madonna distinctly Byzantine, despite the many renovations over the years. The living quarters of the monastery are located near by with a small chaple dedicated to "The Presentation of the Holy Madonna of the Temple". There is a natural spring inside the chapel and on 21st November, its name day many pilgrims visit the chapel from all over the island.

Monastery of The Holy Virgin

Located in Old Pyli and founded by St Christodoulos in 1081-1085. Celebrations take place here on 2nd February "Candelmas Day". The murals were semi destroyed by the Turks, but the architectural style is still visable. In this region the churches of Prophet Ilias and Patrikos can also be found.

Church of The Prophet Elias.

Located on the outskirts of Kos Town, this monastery has a high rock lying next to it where a Queen built a castle to lead a monastic life. For this reason, this area is still called The Castle of The Queen today. Also in this region are the old churches of The Madonna of Tsoukalarion and Aghia Melou.
